Investing in a new barge fleet to boost inland waterway capacity
Adding a new barge fleet enables GLS to increase service frequency and schedule reliability on key routes in the South.
GLS has completed a new round of investment in additional barges, raising its total inland waterway capacity to a higher level. The new barges are built to modern technical standards, optimised for the Cat Lai – Cai Mep route and the ICD network across southern Vietnam.
An in-house barge fleet is the foundation of GLS's closed-loop operating model: instead of relying on hired vessels, the company actively controls schedules, quality and cargo safety on every trip.
Higher frequency, more reliable schedules
With the added capacity, GLS increases service frequency on key routes, shortens waiting times and commits to reliable schedules even during peak season. This is a decisive factor that helps customers plan their supply chains more accurately.
Waterway transport also brings cost and environmental benefits: each barge replaces dozens of road container trips, easing pressure on transport infrastructure and significantly cutting emissions per tonne of cargo.
This investment is part of GLS's fleet modernisation roadmap, alongside upgrades to berths, handling equipment and digital operations management systems.
